The fishing business escalated and over the years the Skeggs Group diversified into many other areas such as property investment and development, food processing, farming and deer recovery, shipping, aviation, tourism and wine growing. Sir Cliff, who was knighted in 1987, also served as mayor of Dunedin from 1977-1989. He was a high profile chairman of both the Otago Harbour Board and Port Otago and is created with spearheading a container port for Port Chalmers.
